Elder Sign: Omens for iPhone App Reviews

I love Elder Sign. The board game is excellent & I think the app is great, but my biggest problem lies with the fact that it often feels like this game cheats. Yes, poor choices often result in losses, and a good strategy will help, but Ive managed to lose on "easy" cards despite having more than enough clue tokens & items to reasonably beat it. It feels like after a certain amount of successes, you will automatically fail on 1 or 2 adventures. On some of the harder cards, it feels like you need to sacrifice investigators & items before being able to pass it. The curator is arguably the most ridiculously adventure in the game. Ive had to beat some cards with 4 Investigators, but thats the one card where Ive had all 4, had a very well equipped Joe Diamond (with 5 clues aka 10 rerolls) and still lost! I dont know what kind of algorithm the game uses to determine successes & failures, but it feels as if FFG deliberately stacked the deck highly against the player. Considering that I have full control of my rolls in the Board game version & fail considerably less, its hard not to feel like the game cheats. I still enjoy the app, but some days it feels like a trial in patience. Its why I typically end up playing the board game version instead. At least I can control my own dice roll. Either way, if you can get past the notion that the game cheats and are willing to deal with many losses before beating the harder AOs, this game is still a good way to kill some time, or play ES without having to set and clean up.

A pretty good game, though the instructions take a bit to wade through...after giving it five or six games I got the hang of it. Would recommend to the board game crowd as a well as those who like strategy video games.

Neat concept and great design on the iOS. Felt like too much of a luck driven game.

The probability in this game is so rigged that its not worth playing unless this is fixed. Ive played the actual board game, which is fun, but because the digital game tends towards giving you low chances of getting even one thing you need for any given adventure it makes the game so frustrating. Dont buy unless the app is changed.

Ive played and played and played again. I have never gotten even close to winning. Its impossible to win ever when you need ridiculous dice results, never get what you need, and advance the doom tokens by 2 for rah midnight strike on the clock. This game literally makes me insane!!! I like a challenge, but a win would be nice once in a while. Mechanics are great, love the simplicity of it, hate the fact that its unimaginably impossible to win. I forgot to mention, its impossible.

This is a great game. I was happy to finally come across a game that wasnt super easy and required some forethought and planning in order to have a chance at winning. The low reviews arent due to the game being low quality, they were simply because you arent going to win every time you play and certainly not your first time. I like games that provide a challenge, if you want a challenge instead of mindless tapping at a timed interval, this could be the game for you.

This game is a lot of fun. Dont understand the reviews claiming you cant win. Yes, some of the Ancient Ones are harder to beat than others, but I have won against all of them, several of them consistently. There is a Yahtzee-like luck element, but there are interesting ways to offset the luck factor. The more you play, the more you figure them out.

A great game with varying levels of challenge. From easy to premeditatedly insane, you pick your own difficulty level (by choosing which god you fight). - Tip: If having trouble, choose to play with only two investigators. And make sure they are both good ones.

The reviews saying that the game is too hard are right. The rolls on the glyphs are ridiculous! I had all 4 investigators on one adventure and not a single one was able to complete it. Even with focusing and adding red and yellow glyphs. Not only that but it seems like the midnight effect adds too many doom track tokens. I have not one a single game and Ive only played with Yig as the Ancient One and hes supposed to be "easy" this game needs a major update on glyph rolls or the glyph requirements per adventure and stop making the midnight effect add 2 doom tokens!!!!

Nice port of the board game. For the haters, read a strategy guide. My only complaint is the In-App-Purchases; the extended game play is overpriced for a $4 game, they should be included.

This game is better then the boardgame version. Challenging but fair. I have beat all the ancient ones but ithaqua but I came close. Few more tries; the catch is to get at least 18 supplies before you launch the expedition. Great game. Great graphics. Great story line. Great sound effects.

I brought this app before playing the board game. I enjoyed this app very much. It has a lot of options, so each game feel new. It is a hard game, but with every game, the more you play the more you learn the better you get.

I like this game and have beaten the first three but I do think it shouldnt be all as hard to get exact rolls and please make a new ancient one because I am looking forward to seeing a new creature

I heard great things about the board game, so I thought this would be a good primer. From what I understand the board game is difficult as well, but at the table, with friends, you can bond over the stress and take great pleasure in the rare win. That DOES NOT translate over to a mobile game where the majority of the games played will be solo. You can employ strategies to not loose as fast, but thats it. You have NO control over the game results because the success or failure is determined by random glyph generation. So this game is nothing more than a glorified slot machine. Your good performance and smart game play WILL NOT BE REWARDED because you cant stop the progress of the old ones. I like FFG, and play some of their games, but this game? UTTER GARBAGE.

Im a big fan of the Elder Sign board game, so I grabbed this game just for fun. Its certainly more difficult than the board game, with a few of the mechanics being different, but I love it! You have to know the game. Know the characters and what each is capable of. It is not just luck. It is luck mixed with strategy and understanding of odds. Yes, sometimes youll get awful rolls, but that happens when playing with real dice, too. Be smart about your play, and you can get the upper hand. Seriously, I play a LOT of different tabletop game, including every one of FFs Lovecraftian games, and they all have some element of luck to them. On this app, I win about 60% of the time, but its a challenge every time! Dont buy it, or any Fantasy Flights game for that matter, if you dont want to work hard for your wins! :)

As the title says, the app isnt hard or impossible. As with most ffg card/board games, its complex but thats what I love so much about them. These sort of board games needs to be fully understood prior to judgement, learn the rules to the game, then play it. Why Im so appreciative that ffg released this app is because I was hesitant of purchasing the board game due to how complex the gameplay might be. After playing (and learning the game) for a couple days and went right out and bought the hard copy. The gameplay on the hard copy is just as amazing, if not more. I recommend that as well! LEARN THE GAME, THEN PASS JUDGMENT.

This is a great game and It convinced me to buy the board game and both expansions along with Eldritch Horror.

The tasks become way too tough after the first "easy" level.

I dont ordinarily leave many reviews but when I saw how low-rated this app was, I had to sign in. Ive spent dozens of hours with this game since I originally bought it. Its very well designed and the game is intended to be challenging—you really have to play and lose a few times before you start to grasp the underlying strategies. Finally, understand that this is Lovecraft. The entire mythos is based on the concept that mankind is fighting a losing battle against overwhelming dark forces and victory does not come easy or cheap.

I would first like to say that this game is definitely beatable. I have won 80% of the time. Thats out of about 10 games or so. Saying that, I would say its not worth the money. They give only 4 bosses to play, and you have to pay way to much to unlock more. Also they only have maybe half the characters available and the rest have to be purchased. Im already getting bored with the bosses and will not be spending more money to unlock the rest. They should change it. Thanks for a fun, yet too expensive game.
